What tasks can be used to help 8th grade students understand two-way frequency tables AND help 3rd graders write equations with variables?   These puzzles are challenging, engaging, and fun!

In episode 1, we introduced two-circle Venn diagram logic puzzles.  This puzzle, however, is different.  When students correctly interpret all clues, the answer will not be complete.  Students in middle school will need to determine which equations are part of a system of equations, then they need to solve that system.  Students in elementary school will use alternate strategies.  We discuss those, too!

If you have not used Venn diagrams in math at all, you might want to watch this episode of Mind-Bending Mondays first.  (This episode shows you how to introduce the use of variables using visual attributes, and all the materials you need are available!)

If your students have used Venn diagrams with attributes, but they have not used these puzzles to write equations, you might want to watch episode 1 of this series first.

Here are a few of the mathematical concepts that will be directly addressed in this series:

Elementary School Students:  make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; represent problems using equations with a letter representing the unknown quantity

Middle School Students:  write and solve equations using variables; write and solve systems of equations; determine probabilities and percentages; construct and analyze two-way frequency tables
