Description

John Venn was an English logician who taught logic at Cambridge.  This book is challenging, stimulating, and applicable!

These puzzles are designed to:

  • Increase your ability to perceive and define relationships and organize information
  • Develop and apply algebraic concepts
  • Increase the ability to understand classifications and set theory
  • Improve logical thinking skills

Venn diagrams are often used to understand classifications and set theory, but in these books, students also apply algebraic concepts such as writing and solving equations and systems of equations.

Level B requires the use of three circle Venn diagrams and variables.  (For students not yet using variables, ideas are given to introduce this.)  Students use logical thinking to interpret clues and write equations to represent them.  After correctly interpreting all clues, students are able to find the solution!
In Level C, the solution is still not evident after all clues are correctly interpreted.  In Level C, students must use more than one equation with common variables to complete the puzzle.  In elementary school, students are able to do this using a variety of strategies.  In middle and high schools, students use systems of equations to solve the puzzle.
Most students should begin with Level B and progress to Level C.
